This is with reference to the article “Iran’s threatening posture” (Feb. 6) by Ali Ibrahim. The international community should not ask Saudi Arabia to make efforts to defuse tensions with Iran. Global leaders should first do a little research on this issue before issuing such statements. We all know that Saudi Arabia tried its level best to resolve all regional issues through dialogue. Iran, on the other hand, perceived this approach as the weakness of Saudi Arabia.

The international community should make efforts to rein in Iran, which is promoting sectarianism in the region to establish its hegemony in the Middle East. The nuclear deal was a good opportunity to make Iran mend its ways.

Unfortunately, the world powers lost this opportunity. They don’t have the moral authority to blame any country or lecture Saudi Arabia on this issue.

We cannot ignore Iran’s role in the destabilizing Iraq, Syria and Yemen. It has two faces or to be more precise two teams. One deals with the international audience and the other one calls the shots at home. The latter is stronger than the former. The team dealing with the international players is just a puppet in the hands of the stronger team. I blame the international community for the current crises in the region. Instead of punishing Iran for its ugly role in the Middle East, the world powers awarded this rogue state by signing the nuclear deal.

The role of the United States has been very disappointing in this regard. It actually betrayed its Gulf Arab allies. We know that there is no free lunch in international politics but the policies of Washington will only create more problems in the region.

Instead of calling for making peace, the United Nations should take concrete action against Iran for interfering in the internal matters of its neighbors.
