This is with reference to the article “Is it Modi’s Waterloo?” (Nov. 12) by Rajeev Sharma. It is difficult to call Bihar’s election defeat Modi’s Waterloo but one thing is for sure that the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) faces a bleak future in Indian politics. The Modi wave has died down and the true face of the BJP has been exposed to the masses of India. The BJP was elected mainly because of its development agenda. Instead of focusing on inclusive development, the BJP started changing the social fabric of the Indian society. Communal feelings can never be suppressed in a society as diverse as India’s but those thinking that they can drive a permanent wedge between different communities are living in a fool’s paradise. People of the subcontinent are emotional by nature due to which demagogues easily become popular but this popularity usually proves to be temporary. Delhi and Bihar elections can be cited as examples.
