This is with reference to the article “Deafening silence over Rohingya issue” (Oct. 25) by Harun Yahya. I salute the writer for highlighting this issue time and again. It is sad that the world has completely forgotten about these poor people who have been denied their birthright in their homeland.

Myanmar government’s proposal is nothing but a crude joke. I am surprised that many countries have approved that plan. Sometimes, I feel the United Nations is nothing but a joke. The plan, as pointed out by the writer, is not only flawed but also an attempt to create a “soft image” of Myanmar. The question is: Why would Bangladesh government give these people nationality? This outlandish idea should have been rejected there and then. We also cannot blame Bangladesh for its stance. The Rohingyas belong to Myanmar. At present, these helpless people are doing nothing and awaiting help from the world but these discriminatory policies and the slow-burning genocide will only provide radical elements to step in. The world slams extremism but fails to understand the causes. In most cases, it is injustice and oppression that forces a community to resort to violent tactics. I think the international community should intervene in this matter and get it resolved at the earliest. The Myanmar government’s plan should be rejected and it should be forced to grant these people their legitimate rights. Had a minority community been facing similar situation in a Muslim-dominated country, the world would have created an uproar and so-called analysts would have slammed Islam. Why is nobody commenting on Buddhism? Various Buddhist groups are involved in violent incidents in Sri Lanka as well. We should respect all ideologies and try to find a just solution to the problems facing the world. Instead of criticizing Muslims and Islam, the global powers should revisit their discriminatory policies. This will really help make the world a better place to live.
