The Islamic State (IS) has once again proved that it has nothing to do with Islam and Muslims. By slaughtering Japanese hostage, it has proved that its brutality knows no bounds. This self-appointed custodian of faith can never come up with any Islamic injunction to justify its brutality.

It is really difficult to accept that this group wants to establish Shariah in the world because its actions are completely in contrast with the teachings of Islam. Secondly, the majority of devout Muslims abhors its activities and vehemently condemns the killings of innocent people at the hands of this group.

It seems this self-ascribed Islamic State has a hidden agenda, which is becoming clearer with the passage of time i.e. to malign Muslims and Islam and stoke global hatred against the religion and its followers. One must say that it has been very successful in this regard. Islamophobia is fast taking roots in the West particularly Europe thus making it difficult for Muslims to carry on with their lives without any problem.

The western governments also have a role to play in clearing misconceptions about Islam and Muslims. They should try to take measures to educate their media outlets on these issues. Branding a group like Islamic State a “Muslim” terrorist group is wrong and creates an atmosphere of distrust in society. They should understand that terror has no religion. Anybody, be it an individual or a group, who commits a sin or a crime basically acts against the moral teachings of his/her religion. By calling these groups Islamic, they give an impression as if such stupid people are carrying out some religious duty. The western media should try to change its policy so as to promote peace and harmony.
