I read with interest the article “Double trouble” (Nov. 22) by Christopher R. Hill. Interestingly, the western thinkers are still considering their options in Syria. This approach has led to the destruction of a beautiful country. They seem to have ignored the fact that too much analysis leads to paralysis.

Now these so-called intellectuals should start thinking beyond Assad. After the removal of Assad and elimination of Daesh, reconstruction of Syria will now take decades. The entire civic infrastructure of the country has been destroyed and state institutions need to be re-established. As a matter of fact, Syria has been transformed into Afghanistan.

In such a situation, the West should also not expect Syrian refugees to return to their country after Assad and Daesh. What is left in Syria for them?

The world should have had learned from the mistakes committed in Iraq. Syrian opposition groups should set aside their petty differences and focus on two prime goals: Toppling of Assad regime and elimination of Daesh from their lands.

The international community should extend all-out support to the Syrian opposition. Russia has an important role to play in Syria. Unfortunately, it has sided with Assad. Russian President Vladimir Putin should be convinced to change his policies toward Syria. I strongly believe that the GCC countries have the capability to do that.
