This is with reference to the speech by Yahya Al-Muallami, the Saudi representative to UN, published in the Arab News on Feb. 25. (“UN inaction ‘ravaged’ Mideast: KSA”)

Failure of the League of Nations to prevent the world from wars and conflicts was the main reason why United Nations was established in 1945. Yet, the world is still waiting to see it plays any meaningful role to bring about any extent of peace on earth.

Palestine, Syria, Kashmir, Rwanda, Somalia, Ukraine are some of the major but grave issues that reflect the utter failure of the UN’s ability to resolve international problems. Nay, it is has been reduced to a bundle of paradoxes. Why for instance it fails to authorize the use of force against Syria when similar resolutions it passed when it came to Iraq.

UN in fact has become a puppet in the hands of veto-wielding ‘powerful nations’ — the forces that rule over the Security Council.

It’s high time the UN introduced reforms that could change this international body into a stronger and powerful institution enabling it to make independent decisions without the intervention of the elite forces: USA, UK, France, Russia and China.

Further, it is also time for the Muslim countries to break their hopes from UN give up their differences, and truly unite under the banner of OIC and find ways of their own to resolve their problems.
