This is with reference to the report “Iran taking over Iraq: KSA” (March 6). Nobody could dispute this claim. Tehran’s sectarian policies are wreaking havoc on the region. Despite assurances from the United States, the imminent détente between Washington and Tehran will aggravate the situation. The US appears to be ignoring the concerns expressed by its regional allies. US insistence on reaching a nuclear deal with Iran is beyond comprehension. Does Washington really believe that Tehran will mend its ways after reaching a nuclear deal? Will it start acting as a responsible member of the international community? I think not.

The US, if it really wants to allay the fears of its regional allies, should link the deal to an Iranian pledge not to interfere in neighboring countries’ affairs and to withdraw its mercenaries from Syria, Iraq and Yemen.

This is the right time and right approach to press Iran to check its expansionist designs. The Arab world should also put forward a similar proposal. If the US responds in the affirmative and adds this clause as a key condition, then the Gulf countries should continue with their current policies toward the US. In case of US’ failure to respect the sentiments of its regional allies, the Arab world should revisit its policies toward Washington. There is no free lunch in international politics. It is more of a give-and-take game.

The US has apparently gained more from its Middle Eastern allies. It is time for Washington to accord preference to the wishes of its regional allies. It seems as if US President Obama desperately wants to add this feather to his cap before he departs from the White House. His insistence on this deal is perhaps due to his utter failure on other foreign policy issues. However, it would be better if personal sentiments were set aside while making such important decisions.
