I read with interest the article “Another Afghanistan is in the making?” (June 13) by Osman Mirghani. When I look around the region, I feel that it’s not just Libya but there are many Afghanistan in the making all around us. Before blaming others for this situation, we should first assess our roles. What, as a nation, have we done to stop the carnage? These crises will not end, as long as we rely on others to clear the mess for us. First of all, we need to identify all the problems facing the Ummah and their root causes. Secondly, we need to forge unity among our ranks. We should set aside our petty differences for the greater good of the nation. The infighting and unnecessary tussles between Muslim countries should be stopped.

We need to identify the factors responsible for the growth of extremist ideology and terrorist organizations. We cannot absolve foreign powers of all the responsibility for the growth of these organizations but we should better address the domestic factors that help these organizations promote their skewed ideology.

The Muslim world should form a union to jointly tackle the economic woes. We need to act fast before the situation gets out of control.
