Whenever I watch any Pakistani news channel, I start feeling depressed. It is really sad that our politicians, who are running the show, are totally unaware of the true problems of the masses. They try to give an impression as if everything is fine and Pakistan is on the road to unprecedented progress. It seems that when they mention Pakistan they indirectly refer to themselves. Otherwise, the conditions under which the masses are being forced to live are far from satisfactory. Terrorism is not the only issue that is haunting the country.

People are still longing for the basic amenities. Road projects, metros and tall buildings are commendable but these projects don’t necessarily reflect the true state of affairs. Our politicians should wake up to the realities and start taking measures to address the situation. First and foremost, the tax net should be widened. Most, if not all, of the influential people evade taxes with impunity and they get away with it due to their connections in the circles of power. If the government successfully collects taxes from everyone, many of our economic problems will get resolved in no time.
