This is with reference to the report “Shoura Council ‘open to discuss women’s driving’” (Dec. 17). I fail to understand what is the big deal about women driving in the Kingdom. It is not against Shariah. I believe this issue should be resolved at the earliest. Tribal customs should not be allowed to obstruct Kingdom’s march toward modernity. Interestingly, women in villages within the Kingdom reportedly drive heavy vehicles. So, why not allow them to drive cars in cities?

Had it been an un-Islamic act, the opposition would have been understandable. In fact, allowing women to drive will help them become more independent.
