RIYADH: In a major operation, the Riyadh municipality shut down 15 recreational facilities in the capital for not complying with the bye-laws of the local authority.

Bandar Al-Kredees, the head of the municipality in the north of the capital, said here that it was a major crackdown on gymnasiums, spas in hotels and massage parlors to ensure that they are in compliance with the local laws of the municipality.

He said that during an inspection of 26 centers in the north of Riyadh, the municipality shut down eight health centers and partially closed seven spas last week.

He said 14 workers at these sites did not have health certificates from the municipality. The workers are supposed to renew their certificates at regular intervals specified according to the local rules. Healthcare wellness, spa and fitness centers feature state of the art fitness equipment with cardio and resistance machines as well as specialized free weights and designated stretch areas.
