JEDDAH: There are 357 open wells in Jeddah which are a threat to the residents of the areas where they are located, according to a report of the committee for the survey of open and abandoned wells.

An online newspaper, referring to the report, said that the committee which came out with this report comprises various government agencies, including the Civil Defense, Ministry of Agriculture and the National Water Company.

The report covered all details of these wells which pose a threat to citizens and expatriates.

The report demanded that these wells be re-developed or repaired so that they do not cause any threat to the public. It has said that a team comprising the ministries of interior, water, electricity and agriculture was formed to prepare a mechanism to deal with the threat of such wells to human lives.

The team has held a number of meetings in the office of the Directorate General of Civil Defense to study the rules, regulations and guidelines of digging these wells and the licensing of the companies involved.
