Saudi Arabia deported 65 Egyptian fishermen who were arrested on board two Egyptian fishing boats two months ago for fishing in its territorial waters without authorization.

“The fishermen were released after a 50-day detention in the Kingdom for unlicensed fishing in Saudi Arabia’s territorial waters,” a maritime source told local media in Egypt.

Saudi authorities had also slapped a fine of $4,000 on the ship carrying the fishermen for violating the Kingdom’s territorial waters on Feb. 21. The fishermen were released after payment of the fine. The authorities also released the 30 fishermen.

Bakri Abul-Hassan, head of the Egyptian fishermen’s group in the Egyptian city of Suez, said that two fishermen are to give prosecutors in Suez an account of their detention in Saudi Arabia.

In February, an Egyptian fisherman was killed and the 65 were arrested after a Saudi Arabian border guard fired shots at two Egyptian fishing boats that entered territorial waters without permission.

Egyptian fishermen are frequently found fishing illegally in territorial waters of other countries. They brave trips to countries such as Libya, Tunisia, Saudi Arabia, Malta, Cyprus, Greece, Turkey, Israel and Italy because Egyptian waters are short on fish and crowded with boats.
