JEDDAH: A 19-year-old Saudi man, “Abu Sin,” who was arrested on charges of “unethical behavior” has been freed on bail after a weeklong detention.
The news of his release was first reported by Al Arabiya News Channel on Thursday.
The bubbly young man had appeared in online video exchanges with 21-year-old American vlogger, Christina Crockett.
Riyadh police spokesman Col. Fawaz Al-Miman was quoted as saying that “Abu Sin was jailed for violating Article 6 of the Cyber Crime Law, which prohibits producing content deemed harmful to general order, public decency and religious values.”
According to Al Arabiya, his case remains open at the Bureau of Investigation and Public Prosecution. If found guilty, Abu Sin faces up to five years in jail and/or a fine of no more than SR3 million.
In a recent video on Twitter, Abu Sin is seen heaving a sigh of relief at his release.
He expressed his regret at sharing his videos online. “I will never do it again,” he said in the video clip.
The conversations between Abu Sin and Crockett were first broadcast on YouNow before being relayed on YouTube. They soon grew in popularity on that platform, garnering hundreds of thousands of viewers.
