RIYADH: The number of female candidates who have won the municipal elections in the Kingdom has increased to 21, following the draw process at centers where tie votes were recorded.

"The number of Saudi females winning municipal seats, according to the final results, stands at 21, while the number of male and female voters in all local committees is 702,542, equivalent to 47.4 percent of the total," Judea Al-Qahtani, the spokesman of the municipal council elections, was quoted as saying by local media on Wednesday.

Al-Qahtani added that the proportion of female voters in all local communities across Saudi Arabia stood at 81.6 percent of total voters, an estimated number of 130,000 electors.

He noted that the Northern Border region topped Saudi regions in terms of density of voters, with voting rates reaching 73.3 percent of the total number of voters, which numbered 48,131, of which 35,746 electors cast ballots.

Hail came second with 67.2 percent where 57,685 male and female electors cast ballots from the 85,729 registered voters.

Jouf followed with 66.3 percent. The total number of the electors who casted ballots stood at 31,424 out of the registered voters numbered at 47,417.

Makkah came next to last with about 13,791 male and female voter casting ballots, about 30.8 of the total, and was preceded by Jeddah which recorded a higher proportional turnout with 34.8 percent. The number of eligible voters registered in Jeddah amounted to 114,189 of which only 39,773 cast ballots.

With the announcement of the names of the 2,106 elected members of the municipal councils across Saudi Arabia, the curtain comes down on the historical elections for civic councils, in which Saudi women participated for the first time as voters and candidates.
