JEDDAH: The Saudi Council of Senior Scholars on Sunday condemned Iran’s statements over the execution of 47 terror convicts, even as the GCC denounced the attacks on the Saudi Embassy and Consulate in Iran.

The council affirmed that the “implementation of judicial rulings against criminals has been proven legally.”

Condemning the attacks on the Saudi Embassy in Tehran and its Consulate in Mashhad, Qatar’s Foreign Ministry said: “It is a clear and unacceptable violation of the international covenants and the Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations of 1961.”

It demanded that the Iranian government provide adequate protection to diplomatic missions and their members, and take all necessary legal measures against the aggressors.

Abdul Aziz Al-Zayani, GCC secretary-general, said that Iran failed in preventing these attacks, which is a violation of the Vienna Convention and international laws. Al-Zayani rejected Iranian denunciation of the execution of terrorists. He called Iran’s statements as “propaganda and provocation, which encouraged the attacks on the missions,” according to the Okaz daily newspaper.

Meanwhile, the UAE summoned Iran's Ambassador Mohammad Reza Fayyad and handed him a protest letter over Tehran’s interference in the affairs of Saudi Arabia and the attacks on its missions.

“These acts represent a violation of international charters and norms,” said the UAE’s Foreign Ministry.

Kuwait also slammed Iran over its wild statements over the executions and attacks on Saudi missions.

Iranian authorities should shoulder their responsibility to protect the missions and ensure the safety of its staff, a source said.

Bahrain termed the attacks “barbarism,” saying these were a clear violation and rejection of international norms and treaties.

Separately, Jordan condemned the attacks and termed them a “clear violation” of international treaties, which emphasize protection of diplomatic missions and their respect.

Amman reiterated that it would stand by the Kingdom in the fight against terrorism and extremism.
