RIYADH: Riyadh police have arrested a blackmailer who threatened to post a girl’s pictures on social media.
Police spokesman Col. Fawaz bin Jameel Al-Maiman said police had acted on a complaint from a girl who said that a man was demanding money from her or he would post her photos on social media sites.
Police carried out a search with the cooperation of the Committee for the Promotion of Virtue and the Prevention of Vice, or Haia.
The man, a Saudi in his 30s, was apprehended, confessed to his crime and admitted that he used his personal mobile to threaten the girl.
Al-Maiman said police were making further inquiries to find out if other people were involved in this racket.
On completion of police inquiries, the suspect will be taken to court for necessary punishment, Al-Maiman said.
Last month, a Saudi youth, who was blackmailing a girl and threatening to post her photographs on social media, was arrested in the Badr district here.
Police said the suspect, in his 20s, had threatened the girl with posting her photos on social media.
Blackmailers’ demands are not always for money; they may also be for immoral and criminal acts. Most victims prefer to meet the blackmailer’s demands and avoid public exposure.
According to statistics, many teenagers in the United States have been victims of cyber blackmail.
