ALKHOBAR: Forty-three cases of violence were reported among the 2,400 low-income families sponsored by the Wud Charity organization in four districts in Alkhobar.

This is according to the rehabilitation, mental and health care programs implemented by the organization in collaboration with the authorities concerned under the supervision of specialized consultants.

The organization's chairwoman, Naima Al-Zamil, said that these cases of battery were taken up as part of an awareness program implemented under Family Safety Day in order to increase awareness and educate families about domestic violence and its dangerous consequences that negatively reflect on the individual, family and community.

The program includes social and psychological lectures provided by Mai Al-Ghamdi and Zahra Al-Hassan, Al-Zamil said, stressing that there are many solutions to deal with this social problem through educating participating families, helping them find the proper mechanism to stop the violence practiced by one member of the family, along with clarifying the violence outcomes.

Regarding the reasons behind this type of violence, Al-Zamil said: "Economic factors such as unemployment and poverty are the main reasons that lead to the emergence of domestic violence, followed by behavioral and ethical deviations like drug addiction, in addition to other reasons, including family disintegration, temperament and the absence of a culture of interaction among family members."

Al-Zamil said that this program revealed the high rate of violence against women more than men as a result of ignorance, negative traditions and customs.

The program brought tangible positive results for the battered through increasing awareness, education and knowledge of the ideal behavior when exposed to domestic violence.

She said the implementation of a new fund titled, “Your silence won't stop violence,” which aims at urging battered subjects to reject such practices and eliminate them.
