JEDDAH: A Makkah charity plans to distribute 600,000 meals during Ramadan at the Grand Mosque and other locations.

Faisal Al-Hameed, manager of Nama’ charitable association in Makkah, said 300,000 light meals would be distributed at the mosque, and the rest at other locations.

At a press conference on Tuesday held to announce the charity’s work and new identity, Al-Hameed said that meals would be provided by several companies. There would be 150 charity workers and volunteers distributing the food.

There would also be provision made for 30 projects involving several needy families and individuals during the period, as part of its normal operations, he said.

Salim Al-Faydi, media and public relations manager at the charity, said that there would also be 40,000 meals distributed as Fitr Zakat, which is the alms distributed at the end of every Ramadan. There would be 120,000 kg of rice handed, with each bag containing 3 kg, he said. “Our standards are high when it comes to receiving donations. We refuse to take any product that has less than a six-month life-span.” A committee has been set up to ensure all food abides by strict quality standards, he said.
