RIYADH: Minister of Labor and Social Development Dr. Mufrej Al-Haqabani announced that persons with disabilities are partners in the Kingdom’s economic development.
“The government had in mind persons with disabilities when it integrated the Ministries of Labor and Social Affairs into a single ministry because their responsibilities complement each other,” he said.
He made the announcement in a speech on the occasion of a recent workshop on the “National Strategy for Persons with Disabilities” in the Saudi capital, which he sponsored.
“Merging the two ministries is also in line with the objectives under the Vision 2030 plan announced recently by Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Salman,” he said.
He pointed out the need to empower people with disabilities and give them the opportunity to work so that they can contribute to the Kingdom’s productivity.
They will also feel, he added, that “they have a role to play in society instead of being a liability and staying in a corner indulging in self-pity.”
“In this regard, we all have a collective role to make them feel self-confident and make use of their inborn talents to do something useful and meaningful to them and their fellowmen,” he said. He also announced regulations to facilitate the movement of citizens in the private sector to create a good working environment for people with disabilities.
For his part, Dr. Abdullah bin Saud Al-Maiql, undersecretary of the Ministry of Labor and Social Development, said, “The workshop seeks to discuss the strategy and vision with the participation of persons with disabilities.”
He said that the workshop discussed the main challenges faced by people with disabilities with the end in view of integrating them into society.
“Assistance and services to them were also discussed, including their economic stability, education, training and health care,” he said.
