JEDDAH: Despite the strict implementation of rules and regulations by the Jeddah traffic department, some motorists continue to defy them regardless of the danger of accidents.

One such place is the Madinah Road-Tahlia Street intersection where drivers tend to ignore the red light.

Ahmed Malik, a British national and a diver, said there are some who take delight in breaking traffic rules. All they want to do is to be the first to cross such intersections.

“I have seen motorists taking cuts and obstructing the free flow of cars going right at the Madinah Road-Tahlia intersection. Such acts have resulted in accidents on many occasions before. They don’t want to follow the queue but come in front illegally,” said Malik.

Malik suggested that to stop such unlawful acts, the traffic department put tire-busters so the cars from other sides will not be able to come on Tahlia Street while driving back and only cars from Tahlia Street can go on to Madinah road.

Another motorist, Tanzeem ur Rahman, said some drivers of Jeddah don’t obey traffic rules and that’s why accidents are increasing in numbers.

Rahman said drivers who care about backing up into the main road at this point can confuse others who are trying to enter the service lane from the main road. “I have seen accidents at this point where cars illegally try to back out and are hit by vehicles who are allowed to go in,” he said.

He was also of the view that the traffic department should install tire-busters in order to discourage motorists from driving on the wrong side of the road.

Motorist Younes Nidam said many drivers don’t use indicators to let other drivers know which way they want to go. They don’t realize that this simple action can save lives and by not doing this they are breaking the law.
