JEDDAH: The Tunisian Consulate celebrated the country’s Nobel Peace Prize 2015 win at the residence of the Tunisian Consul General Fathi Al-Nafati on Tuesday.

Al-Nafati and his spouse welcomed Ambassador Mohammed Ahmed Al-Tayib, director general at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Makkah region, diplomats, guests and friends to the celebration.

The Norwegian Nobel Committee announced that the Nobel Peace Prize for 2015 was to be awarded to the Tunisian National Dialogue Quartet for its decisive contribution to the building of a pluralistic democracy in Tunisia in the wake of the Jasmine Revolution of 2011.

Ambassador Mohammed Ahmed Al-Tayib said it is a proud achievement for Tunisia and its youth on winning the Nobel Peace Prize 2015, and he was confident this prize would contribute toward safeguarding democracy in Tunisia and be an inspiration to all those who seek to promote peace and democracy in the Middle East, North Africa and the rest of the world.

He said this victory came through the joint efforts of Tunisian General Labor Union, Tunisian Human Rights League, National Bar Association of Tunisia and the Tunisian people.

This is the first time in the history of Nobel Prize that it is being given to a civil society group, he said.

US Consul General Todd Holmstrom congratulated the Tunisian consul general and community on its success and said Tunisia is an example of how a nation can fashion their own political solution to overcome daunting challenges.
