RIYADH: Most Filipino expatriates were, on Monday, celebrating the unofficial announcement of a landslide victory of Rodrigo “Rody” Duterte in the presidential election of the Philippines.
Duterte, the mayor of the southern city of Davao who was leading in the pre-election polls, has promised to wipe out crime and corruption in three to six months if he wins.
The Overseas Absentee Voting (OAV) officially closed here at 1:52 p.m. on Monday.
Consul General Iric Arribas described this year’s election here as peaceful. “I observed the whole process and it was very peaceful. The participation of more 20,000 overseas Filipinos indicates that they are still mindful of their national duties.”
“Filipinos in Saudi Arabia are already celebrating what appears to be assured victory for their most favorite candidate, Duerte, for the presidency,” said Saidali M. Malic, secretary-general of DMEM.
Earlier, an open dialogue was conducted between the Filipino Community leaders in Riyadh and Foreign Affairs Undersecretary Rafael Seguis. They discussed some important issues, including the low turnout of the overseas absentee voting.
The group emphasized on reviving the cooperative relationship between the embassy and the Filipino community, giving due recognition to the important role being played by the community leaders.
They are rendering voluntary services and providing assistance to the community, especially in addressing their concerns.
As the national election ends, Filipinos all over the world are anticipating a new government with positive hopes and vibes. On the contrary, others are worried about the negative consequences of the polls as there were already rumors on massive illegal campaigns, vote buying and other forms of cheating and election-related violence.
