RIYADH: The Ministry of Health has announced five new cases — four women and one man — of Middle East Respiratory Syndrome coronavirus (MERS), which brings the total number of reported infections during Ramadan to eight.
The women included three expatriates, two of them health personnel working at government hospitals.
The other three cases reported during Ramadan were two males from Madinah and Al-Kharj, who had contracted the disease directly from camels, and one Saudi woman, who was a primary case.
Since June 2012, there have been 1,388 MERS cases in the Kingdom, which included 593 deaths or 42.7 percent of the total number of cases. Currently five people are receiving treatment at Riyadh hospitals.
The ministry has called on health directors to impose restrictions on those who refuse to receive treatment, and seek the help of executive bodies and the police.
