Germany is developing closer trade and cultural ties with Saudi Arabia, the German ambassador said here recently.

Speaking at the country's National Day celebrations at his residence in the Diplomatic Quarter, Boris Ruge said: “Germany and Saudi Arabia are leading countries in their respective regions. We have a long tradition of friendly relations.”

Riyadh Gov. Prince Turki bin Abdullah bin Abdul Aziz attended the event.

Under the guidance of Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Abdullah and Chancellor Angela Merkel, the relationship has developed further, he said.

Ruge said bilateral trade has risen significantly, with the number of visas issued to Saudis tripling over the past three years.

“Given the turbulence in the region, cooperation on political and strategic issues has become increasingly important.”

Ruge said German Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier "just had a very successful visit to Jeddah, including meeting with Crown Prince Salman, the deputy crown prince, foreign minister, and minister of the National Guard.”

He said that during the visit, Steinmeier underlined the importance of cultural ties and had meetings with representatives of civil society.

“In the same vein, our Saudi colleagues just organized a very successful cultural week in Berlin. Germany, for its part, will be the guest of honor at the 2015 Janadriyah Festival, and we are working hard to live up to the high expectations,” he said.

“Speaking of culture, I would like to extend a warm welcome to students and staff of the Arts and Skills Institute. Many thanks for bringing the artwork of young Saudi women to our residence.”

Ruge said he joined the German foreign service 25 years ago, just six months before the Berlin Wall came down "as a result of the peaceful revolution in East Germany.”

“Twenty-five years later, we are still grateful for what happened back then. And we have not forgotten those who helped us regain our unity,” he said.

The reception was attended by German Embassy staff including Deputy Chief of Mission Michael Ohnmacht, German nationals in the Kingdom, the diplomatic community and invited guests.
