RIYADH: Authorities have closed a tire shop in Hail selling expired and used products which were not roadworthy.
During an inspection tour, government officials found 280 tires past their expiry date which were being sold to customers.
In the shop’s warehouse which was camouflaged as a residential apartment, there were 116 tires that had expired in 2015 and 172 used tires that were not suitable for Saudi roads.
Sources said that the owner of the tire shop had been summoned for a detailed inquiry and that he would be referred to relevant bodies for legal action. The raids were conducted during ministerial inspections, implemented by the ministry on warehouses and commercial institutions, to verify their regular operations, to ensure the absence of fraud and manipulative practices, and to eradicate the supply of counterfeit and substandard products to the local market.
The Ministry of Commerce and Investment emphasized that it would not hesitate to impose legal penalties on offenders and those involved in fraud which puts the health and safety of consumers at risk. It called on consumers to lodge complaints on the toll-free number 1900, or through the application of a commercial notification.
Motorists and drivers should exercise extra care when purchasing tires. Drivers should be aware of the manufacturing date and the date of expiry, the importance of changing an expired tire, and the proper way to store tires.
Drivers should also be aware of how to inspect tires prior to buying, and to ensure that they have not been affected by heat or humidity — as this increases the risks of a tire blowout and accident.
Motorists are advised not to buy tires two years after their date of manufacture; it is important to check the date of manufacture which is written on the tire.
“The buyer must check the four-digit DOT code branded on the rim of the tire, which indicates the date of manufacture. For example, the four digits 4202 branded on the tire’s rim means that the tire was manufactured in the 42nd week of 2002; with the initial 2 digits being used to identify the week and the last two digits identifying the year.
