JEDDAH: In a sustained campaign against violation of health rules, the Jeddah Municipality destroyed over 67 tons of rotten or expired food items in Sawareikh Market (Hiraj Market) in the south of Jeddah on Monday.

Mohammed Al-Zahrani, head of the south Jeddah municipality branch, said that the goods were seized during routine inspection of the shops in the market. He said 480 bags of expired food stuff were seized from Rahmaniyah and Deira markets also, he said.

Al-Zahrani said that the Municipality will not tolerate any irregularities and will take all the legal procedures against violators.

The municipality aims to step up food safety programs and promote personal hygiene so as to avoid diseases. It has urged the citizens to report any irregularities at 940 or convey it to the Secretariat through social networking sites.
