JEDDAH: Culture and Information Minister Adel Al-Toraifi has approved the establishment of a national musical orchestra, which is expected to mobilize cultural movement in the Kingdom.
The Saudi National Orchestra will participate in national and other events in the Kingdom and outside to project through music the role of the Kingdom, its civilization, folklore and heritage, an online publication reported Sunday.
“The orchestra will celebrate the homeland and life. It will support the Saudi Authority for Entertainment and participate in every national event in cooperation with Radio and Television Commission,” Hassan Khairat, the artist who introduced the idea, was quoted as saying.
The new orchestra will be a tributary for all the activities related to the commission, and it will involve gathering all musicians — both employed and retired — and also individuals working on contracts in various sectors, he said.
“This will also entail the formation of a special orchestra for the Radio and Television Commission under the umbrella of cultural channel, the closest in terms of specialization to take care of this activity in the best interest of the public and to support television programs,” said Khairat.
This will be in addition to the establishment of a new department in the cultural channel under the name of the Department of Music and National Fine Arts, he said.
Khairat said the idea of establishing a national orchestra has been approved by Mohammad Al-Eid, the general supervisor of the cultural channel. He submitted the request to Abdulmalek Al-Shalhoub, the chairman of the Radio and Television Commission, he said.
“Establishing the national orchestra is the solution to restore the Saudi musical identity in the media. It will attract young musicians,” added Khairat.
