RIYADH: The Saudi Human Rights Commission (HRC) has slammed conditions at a shelter for maids here, saying it lacked security, surveillance cameras, emergency exits and ventilation.

According to its 2014 annual report released to the media recently, the center also does not have an integrated medical clinic or permanent women physicians, only a visiting doctor.

The report said that employees have not been promoted for years, and often deal with cases outside of their jurisdiction that have been referred by the police.

In addition, sometimes the police bring housemaids to the center straight from the airport without checking their tickets or with their sponsors.

The HRC has stressed the need to move the center to a healthy environment with full services such as a medical clinic, surveillance cameras and security guards. It should ensure that those with psychiatric problems are isolated from other residents.

It also recommended that maids who have run away should be separated from those who are waiting for their sponsors.
