JEDDAH: Thoraya Matyori, who weighed 300 kg, was apparently the heaviest woman in Makkah seven months, when she was taken in an ambulance to the Security Forces Hospital. In what can be called a record of sorts, she lost as much as 140 kg and walked out of the hospital recently.
Leaving the hospital with tears of joy in her eyes, she thanked God for the blessings and success of the challenging weight-reduction program, when a local publication welcomed her with flowers at the hospital.
Matyori had been deprived of walking and could not have sound sleep for more than five years, the local publication said on Tuesday.
Dr. Meshari Alotaibi of the Security Forces Hospital said that following a directive by Crown Prince Mohammed bin Naif to quickly treat the patient, a medical team was formed and all the joint efforts succeeded in achieving this great result.
“The program was supervised by Rashid Al-Dousari, general director of the health services in the hospital, and his medical team. They managed to reduce the patient’s weight from 300 kg to 160 in three stages of treatment. Now, the patient can sleep and walk. She is still under treatment and follow up for further reduction of weight and to regain a good health state,” he said.
Dr. Khalid Al-Zahrani, the medical director of the hospital, was quoted as saying that the medical department made all the arrangements and a special room for the patient. “The room was equipped with all the necessary items and workshops were organized to discuss the line of treatment. Doctors from all the required specialties attended. The treatment was divided into three stages — the first one included medicines and diet program along with social and psychological support.”
After the first stage, the medical team moved to the second stage, which involved the medical procedure, he said. “After the procedure, the patient was subjected to intensive rehabilitation and training program to get used to the new eating habits,” he said.
During the third stage, the patient started to lose weight significantly, and managed to walk.
The patient said, “I want to first thank Crown Prince Mohammed bin Naif for this humanitarian initiative. Now, I can sleep and walk. Thank God. I also thank the administration of the hospital for their big efforts, especially the doctor and the medical team who supervised my treatment.”
