RIYADH: The Special Criminal Court here has sentenced a citizen to 12 years in jail for helping to fund terrorist activities in Syria, a local publication reported on Tuesday.
The first defendant was also banned from traveling for the same period after completing his sentence. He was found guilty of violating the country’s forgery, cyber and money laundering laws. In other rulings, the second defendant was sentenced to 10 months in prison and banned from traveling for two years, while the third and fourth defendants were released because of a lack of evidence against them.
The court found the first defendant guilty of embracing the takfiri ideology, declaring other Muslims non-believers, in violation to the Qur’an and Sunnah. He was also convicted for receiving SR60,000 and SR250,000 and other amounts that he sent to support fighters in Syria.
The court also found him guilty of establishing a secret society with other people to collect SR1 million to support fighters in Syria; issuing fatwas against the rulers; traveling to Syria to take part in the fighting in that country; and using the passport of another person to travel to Syria.
He was also convicted on charge of setting up a Twitter account urging people to join the fighting in Syria; making seditious statements against the government; and defending those arrested on terror charges in the Kingdom. The court said he had also threatened a woman on Twitter by saying he wanted to attack one of her relatives who had objected to his call for people to travel to Syria.
The second defendant was found guilty of communicating via WhatsApp with his brother in Syria; joining a terrorist group; trying to raise funds in a chatroom for his brother; and receiving an amount of SR60,000 to send to his brother in Syria.
He was sentenced to 10 months for admitting that he had acted wrongfully.
