A Saudi man afflicted with the MERS coronavirus has died in Riyadh, the Ministry Health announced here Sunday.

The deceased was a 37-year-old citizen living in the capital. The ministry official who announced the death did not reveal how he contracted the virus nor disclosed information about his previous medical history.

“The announcement is being made within the framework of the constant monitoring and epidemic surveillance of the novel coronavirus,” the official said, adding that the ministry would continue its surveillance on the movement of the virus across the Kingdom and globally.

The death brings the total number of cases in the Kingdom to 130, including 55 deaths.

Last week, a 73-year-old Saudi woman had died after contracting the virus. The patient had also been suffering from chronic illnesses.

The World Health Organization say that it has been informed of 156 laboratory-confirmed MERS cases worldwide so far, including 67 deaths, most of them in Saudi Arabia.
