RIYADH: As raids entered the 11th day of a wide-ranging campaign to nationalize the telecom sector, inspection teams including security personnel visited a number of mobile phone shops in Riyadh and other local towns.
The telecom sector has been placed under scrutiny by vigilant officials from the Ministries of Labor and Social Development, Commerce and Investment, Municipal and Rural Affairs and Communication and IT to implement a rate of 50 percent Saudization.
Dr. Mohammed Al-Faleh, assistant deputy minister for inspection and development of the work environment at the Ministry of Labor and Social Development, took part in inspection rounds that targeted telecom shops in Riyadh, where he met with a group of Saudi workers.
Al-Faleh commended their keenness to embark on telecom careers and seize opportunities in the sector, urging them to benefit from incentives, loans and training programs relating to customer service, sales and cellphone maintenance that the ministry and its affiliates offer.
The inspectors, who were out in force, detected several telecom shops in violation of the Saudization directive, expatriate workers of illegal labor and residence status, and cover-up businesses as well, in their efforts to shut down non-compliant shops.
During the clampdown on the telecom sector, the collective inspectors found a host of cellphone shops that kept their doors shut as a way to opt out, which will be revisited during the upcoming rounds, in addition to some shops with signs for sale and rental.
Joining forces, vigilant citizens were on patrol to lead the inspection teams in a quest to track down violators as inspections aim to implement the directive and take legal action against those who fail to nationalize cell phone sales outlets and repair shops.
