RIYADH: Motorists have warned that the make-shift red plastic barricades and mesh on the city’s roads during construction can cause accidents on windy days.
Seyed H. Moulana, an executive at a private company, told Arab News that he recently saw the plastic barricades flying all over busy Al-Ahsa Street in Riyadh. Some were stuck under cars, immobilizing them, and causing considerable congestion, he said.
He said contractors are discarding the dark pink-colored steel mesh, used to cover the concrete barricades. “I ran over a bundle of it in Malaz and was forced to drive with it stuck under my car for well over 5 km, looking for a safe place to pull out this dangerous object,” he said.
He was able to remove it from his car with the help of another motorist. “I was really perturbed to find the width of it was well over two meters and four meters in length.”
Ali, an accountant working for a construction company, who was also a victim, said contractors should be given clear instructions to secure these items during bad weather. Irresponsible contractors should be held accountable, he said.
