The Ministry of Commerce and Industry has seized more than 15,000 fake consumer products from various stores in Jeddah in a major crackdown to ensure that consumers were getting the genuine item.
The fake items included handbags, watches, perfumes and cosmetics. Officials have been called in for investigations and legal action will be taken against the owners of the stores.
The products were confiscated during a clampdown by the ministry on a number of stores and commercial markets with the aim to check the quality of products, combat fraud and punish the violators.
Inspection teams monitored the violations following notifications from consumers concerning a number of commercial stores. The violations included absence of price tags on several items, a number of fake CDs in addition to electric items such as bilateral plugs and adaptors which could pose a danger to consumers.
Inspection teams raided various locations such as the Al-Swareekh market, Al-Khaiman market, Al-Bawadi traditional market, Al-Shate, Al-Shuibi and Al-Marjan which are famous for selling counterfeit products.
The ministry confirmed that it would deal severely with violators who put the health and safety of consumers at risk.
The ministry called on all consumers to report their complaints and notifications to the call center at the ministry.
