The annual report of the Saudi Council of Engineers (SCE) has revealed that Saudis only make up 6 percent of the total number of engineers registered in the country.

The SCE has 9,122 Saudis registered with it, while there are 135,035 expatriates on its books, the report showed.

The report breaks down the statistics for each specialization. It states that there are 2,356 registered Saudi civil engineers compared to 43,325 foreigners, followed by architecture with 2,314 Saudis and 11,965 expatriates.

In mechanical engineering, there are 1,475 Saudis and 21,677 expatriates, and 1,196 Saudi and 23,600 foreign electrical engineers.

The report stated that there are 544 Saudi and 1,775 expatriate chemical engineers, and 364 Saudi and 2,675 expatriate petroleum engineers.

The breakdown for computer engineers is 334 Saudis and 4,727 expatriates, and 285 and 1,368 for industrial engineers.

In electronic and telecommunication engineering there are 210 Saudis and 14,149 expatriates, with 44 Saudis and 650 expatriates in agricultural engineering posts.

The report said that there are 2,150 registered engineering and consulting companies, with 1,800 offices in the contracting and construction sector.
