RIYADH: Health Minister Tawfiq Al-Rabiah promised Thursday to ensure the safety of doctors in the wake of the shooting of a physician in Riyadh on Wednesday at King Fahd Medical City.
With ministry officials visiting the injured Jordanian doctor, Muhannad Al-Zabn, Al-Rabiah phoned the hospital and said their safety was a priority for him. He wished the doctor a speedy recovery.
According to reports, a Saudi man has been arrested in connection with the shooting. The shooter argued that Dr. Al-Zabn had no right to help during the delivery and that a female gynecologist should have done the job instead.
Dr. Al-Zabn is half Jordanian and half Saudi. The shooting occurred one month after the delivery, when the father went to the hospital to ‘thank’ the doctor for helping his wife during the delivery.
While both were talking in the hospital’s garden, the husband took out a gun he was hiding under his clothes and shot the doctor. The bullet pierced the lung of the doctor, but he is now in a stable condition.
In a statement, KFMC said the delivery of the baby had taken place without any complications and both mother and child were in good health and had been discharged.
Deputy Health Minister Hamad bin Muhammad Al-Duweila, who visited the patient on Thursday, wished him well and said steps would be taken to prevent a repeat of the incident.
Many social media users sided with the obstetrician and expressed sympathy, while others argued that women gynecologists should be available to deliver babies in respect of cultural and religious values.
