A coordinated campaign targeting illegal expatriates working at the auto auction market ended with the arrest of 42 men who are charged with violating Saudi labor laws and could face deportation.
“The municipality is responsible for supervising the markets, especially those dealing with automobile auctions and sales,” said Fahd Abdul Aziz Al-Baqawi of the Eastern Province Municipality. “Those who do not follow the rules and regulations could face severe punishment.”
Al-Baqawi said the crack down was prompted by numerous complaints regarding expatriates working illegally at the market.
The municipality has warned Saudis not to allow expatriates under their sponsorship to participate in open-air markets. “This will lead to the deportation of their employees,” Al-Baqawi said.
Yesterday’s operation involved personnel from the Passports Department, the Eastern Province governorate, municipality, police and the labor office.
