JEDDAH: Two people were killed after a two-story restaurant collapsed in Makkah on Wednesday night, a newspaper reported.

The Arabic language daily Sada said Civil Defense officers helped in clearing debris in search of people buried, but could not find anyone.

“Two people have died so far. Civil Defense units are trying to determine the cause of the collapse,” the paper said.

In September last year, four Yemeni pilgrims sustained minor injuries from a fire that broke out in their room at the 11th floor of a 15-floor hotel in the holy city. Some 1,500 pilgrims staying at the hotel were evacuated as a precautionary measure, but were later allowed to return after Civil Defense teams put out the fire.
