ABHA: More than 40 women chefs displayed their culinary skills with a variety of mouthwatering local and international dishes here recently.

The event, organized by the Abha Chamber of Commerce and Industry, saw the women produce meals, sweets and pastries of various countries including Turkey.

Several women said they made good money and urged the organizers to hold more such events in Asir, including workshops where they could hone their skills and share experiences with others.

Umm Shaker, the most prominent cook in Asir and a participant at the event, said she enjoyed presenting her dishes. It was a great opportunity for talented female cooks who have years of experience to demonstrate their skills and help others, she said.

She said many experienced cooks have been using social media to good advantage, but believes there should be more investment in training. “Institutions should offer programs that introduce these chefs to new developments in the food industry,” she said.

Hala Al-Shamrani, owner of Five Stars Café, which serves hot and cold beverages alongside sweets and donuts, said many local women have used local dishes to grow their businesses.

Rawabi Mufarreh said that she and her daughters had worked long hours to prepare pastries for her stall at the event. Many women were using recipes learned from mothers and grandmothers, with their own touch added, she said.

Saleha Al-Quthani, owner of For Sweets, said that she has gained considerable experience over the years making a variety of sweets, and now has the ability to prepare special buffets. She also called on the organizers to provide more opportunities for female cooks.

The event was the second held by the chamber to support young businesspeople in the region, particularly women.
