MANILA: Gilas Pilipinas found little opposition against Singapore on Monday afternoon and braced itself in a huge way going into its crucial game against Jordan in the Fiba Asia Cup in Wuhan, China.

With Paul Lee continuing to show that he is worthy of being an internationalist and Gary David fighting hard to keep his spot in the roster, the Filipinos mangled the Singaporeans, 74-57, at the Wuhan Gymnasium for their second straight win.

That put the Filipinos within another victory of a preliminary round sweep, which can happen with a win over Jordan in their 5:15 p.m. game Tuesday.

Lee and David scored 10 points each in the lopsided match which saw the Filipinos take it easy in the first half before playing with some intensity in the final two quarters to put the Singaporeans away with authority.

Gilas rose to 2-0 and can top its group with a win over Jordan, which is now being handled by Serb Rajko Toroman, the first coach of the original Gilas Pilipinas program.

Jordan is at 1-1 after losing to Chinese-Taipei and scoring an expected win over Singapore.

Topping the round would mean the lightest first assignment in the cross-over quarterfinals against No. 4 in Group A, which is made up of China, Iran, Japan, India and Indonesia.

Since Uzbekistan withdrew at the last moment, all four teams in Group B will advance, with Group A to drop one country.

India assured its march into the next round after upsetting China, 65-68 on Sunday, after the host Chinese dealt powerhouse Iran its first loss on Saturday, 62-51, to be at 2-1.

Lee and David have so far been the best scorers for the Filipinos after combining for 34 points in a 78-64 decision of Chinese-Taipei last Saturday where they went a combined 7-for-13 from beyond the arc.

Coach Chot Reyes is using this tournament to tryout some new faces and amateurs Garvo Lanete and Kevin Alas got their turns as they combined for 15 points.

Lanete hit a triple with just over four minutes left which gave the Filipinos a 67-45 lead.

Reyes also found little use for naturalized center Marcus Douthit, who wound up scoreless after ripping down 16 boards and scoring eight points against the Taiwanese.

The 6-foot-10 Douthit started out at center and played just 15 minutes.

Lanete, younger brother of San Miguel Beer’s Chico, was on the floor the longest, seeing action for 22 minutes and finishing with seven points.

So dominant were the Filipinos that they scored 42 of their total inside the paint.

Meanwhile, Gilas plays an NBA Selection when it flies home and the opposing team just got a new member in Indiana Pacer superstar swingman Paul George.

George, who helped the Pacers reach the Eastern Conference Finals against the Miami Heat and Lebron James, will thus be joining Los Angeles Clipper Blake Griffin, Portland’s Damien Lillard and Brooklyn’s Paul Pierce in the two-game charity event.

Those two games will also be the last two games that Gilas plays on Philippine soil before flying to the United States for a two-week training stint and then to Europe for several pocket tournaments.

After that, the Nationals fly to Spain for the World Cup.
