SYDNEY: Central Coast Mariners jumped to a four-point lead in Australia’s A-League with a 2-0 win over 10-man Western Sydney Wanderers on Sunday.

The Mariners away win was sealed by two Daniel McBreen goals and coming after Wanderer Jason Trifiro was sent off 10 minutes into the second half.

Central Coast capitalized on second-placed Adelaide United’s scoreless draw with Newcastle Jets on Saturday to move clear.

Third-placed Melbourne Victory’s 2-0 win over Wellington Phoenix on Saturday pushed them to within a win of the top two, while the Wanderers dropped to fourth.

Melbourne Heart leapt into the top six with a pulsating and controversial 3-2 victory over Brisbane Roar at home on Sunday.

The Heart had led 3-0, their second goal looking suspiciously offside, before striker David Williams was sent off with 23 minutes remaining.

Roar’s Albanian striker Besart Berisha scored two late goals — the first from a penalty conceded by Heart Brazilian midfielder Fred — to threaten a comeback.

But the Heart hung on for back-to-back wins, allowing them to leapfrog the Roar into the top six.

Only five points separate the bottom six clubs.

Alessandro Del Piero’s Sydney FC remains bottom despite a gritty fightback for a 2-2 draw against fifth-placed Perth Glory in Perth on Saturday.
