JEDDAH: Edwin Ronquillo put the exclamation point to an imperious display by team champion Taurus-Simaron by winning the men’s Masters title in the 3rd OFBC Kalayaan Cup 2015 one-day bowling tournament at the Ice Land Bowling Center here.

Seventy-two players and 12 teams of six each participated in this FIQ-style competition organized by the Overseas Filipino Bowling Club in celebration of the 117th anniversary of Phillippine Independence Day.

When the dust settled, Taurus-Simaron scored a near-sweep of the seven events contested, missing only the ladies singles and ladies Masters in its five titles haul.

The top 22 men and top 8 ladies after six games qualified for the Masters where they played a further two games with handicap series.

The doubles and trio events were the first to go up for grabs during the first three games played to start the day, with the Simaron duo of Jimmy Urbano and Regino Mendoza winning the doubles where the Yanbu Petrochem’s Osman de Guzman and Estela delos Reyes were first runner-up and Arman Gamboa and Jerry Carredo second runner-up.

Mendoza and Urbano then teamed with Jun Pamintuan to win the trio event. OFBC Force’s Toto Lim, Malou Nidoy and Joel Nidoy took the first runner-up and the Yanbu Petrochem’s Gil Catral, Estela delos Reyes and Osman de Guzman second runner-up.

Joining the winning Simaron team with Urbano, Mendoza and Pamintuan were Edwin Ronquillo, Nathalie Ronquillo and Lexter Atienza who combined for four games (Games 3, 4, 5 and 6) with handicap total of 4,355 pinfalls. The Saudi Diyar sextet of Raul delos Reyes, Thea Busico, Epoy Santos, Lito Zamudio, Olie Jacinto and Art Obra totaled 4,161 in second place, while Yanbu Petrochem (Jun Baculod, Estela delos Reyes, Lito delos Reyes, Hadi Pacheco, Gil Catral and Osman de Guzman) took third place on 4,067.

In the singles event (6 games with handicap) Gloria Vasquez emerged the ladies champion with Urbano ruling the men’s division in a victory that added to his earlier successes in the doubles, trio and team events to become the most bemedalled player in the tournament supported by major sponsor Tahweel Integrated Company through CEO Abdulrahman Al-Omran.

The ladies first runner-up and second runner-up prizes went to Thea Busico and Estela while Olie Jacinto and Cesar Sacramed were the men’s first runner-up and second runner-up respectively.

Simaron skipper Edwin was actually tied with Osman on 401 in the men’s Masters battle but was declared the champion by virtue of a higher scratch score 389-353.

There also was a tie for 2nd runner-up between Sacramed and Ross Isabiniano but organizers decided to split the cash prize when both bowlers remained tied at 344 after the scratch score tiebreaker.

Marlyn Mangunay, a beginning bowler, was crowned the ladies Masters champion with Carmen Duma first runner-up and Stella second runner-up.

In addition to the cash prize Mangunay and Edwin received Samsung Galaxy S5 and Samsung Galaxy S4 smartphones courtesy of Tahweel Integrated Co., which was represented at the awards ceremony by senior accountant Marlon Magtibay. OFBC Sports Chairman Rudy Jamon was also present at the ceremony.

Magnanimous in victory, Edwin waived his champion cash prize in favor of Osman who ended up with the money for champion and first runner-up.
