NEW YORK: Michael Pineda struck out a career-high 16 batters in seven dominant innings as the New York Yankees downed the Baltimore Orioles 6-2.

Pineda (5-0) matched David Cone and David Wells for the second-most strikeouts in a game by a Yankees pitcher. Ron Guidry fanned 18 in 1978.

The 16 strikeouts were the most by the Orioles against one pitcher in a nine-inning game, according to STATS. Baltimore struck out against 18 times overall, a club record for a nine-inning game.

The Orioles dropped five of six during their week in New York against the Yankees and Mets.

Kansas City’s Greg Holland worked out of a bases-loaded, nobody-out jam in the bottom of the 10th inning as the Royals held on to beat the Detroit Tigers 2-1 in a game that was delayed 103 minutes by rain.

Omar Infante’s sacrifice fly in the top of the 10th put the Royals ahead, but Holland allowed a single and two walks to start the bottom half. Hernan Perez — batting because Miguel Cabrera had been removed for a pinch-runner the previous inning — bounced into a 5-2-3 double play, but another walk to Victor Martinez loaded the bases again.

Holland then struck out Yoenis Cespedes for his sixth save in six chances.

In Washington, streaking slugger Bryce Harper doubled, singled and drove in another run — but didn’t homer — as the Capitals beat the Atlanta Braves 5-4 for a three-game sweep.

Harper had hit six home runs in his previous three games. He doubled home a run, giving him 13 RBIs in four games, and also scored once.

Wilson Ramos hit a tiebreaking double off Cody Martin (1-2) to cap a two-run rally in the eighth inning, sending the Nationals to their 10th win in 12 games. Ramos and Ryan Zimmerman each had a double, single and two RBIs.

After the snow was cleared from Coors Field, the Los Angeles Dodgers used Justin Turner’s tiebreaking homer in the eighth inning to send the Colorado Rockies to their ninth straight loss, 9-5.

The series finale began on time after the first two games were affected by the wet weather that has socked Colorado for a week. The gametime temperature was 41 degrees and it dropped to 39 degrees in the ninth.

The Boston Red Sox downed the Toronto Blue Jays 6-3 to avoid a three-game sweep after Mike Napoli hit a three-run homer and Pablo Sandoval added a two-run shot.

Clay Buchholz (2-4) allowed three runs in 6 1-3 innings for his first victory in six starts. The last-place Red Sox won for just the second time in nine games.

Junichi Tazawa pitched 1 2-3 innings and Koji Uehara finished for his sixth save.

Martin Maldonado singled over the Chicago Cubs’ drawn-in outfield with one out in the 11th inning, lifting the Milwaukee Brewers to a 3-2 win, while the Chicago White Sox edged the Cincinnati Reds thanks to Gordon Beckham’s game-winning single in the ninth inning.

In other games, Felix Hernandez became the fourth-youngest player to reach 2,000 career strikeouts as the Seattle Mariners edged the Oakland Athletics 4-3, the San Francisco Giants beat the Florida Marlins 3-2, the Pittsburgh Pirates defeated the Cincinnati Reds 4-3 and the New York Mets defeated the Philadelphia Phillies 7-4.

Cleveland’s Danny Salazar retired 21 straight batters after giving up a home run to start the game as the Indians defeated the Minnesota Twins 8-2, the Texas Rangers edged the Tampa Bay Rays 2-, the Los Angeles Angels downed the Houston Astros 3-1 and the Arizona Diamondbacks were 2-1 winners over the San Diego Padres.
