MANILA: San Miguel Beer is looking fearsome once again, thanks in large part to Arizona Reid.

In the pink of health for the first time in the PBA Governors’ Cup, Reid shot the living daylights out of Globalport on Sunday night and helped the Beermen blow the Batang Pier off the floor, 124-102, for their second straight win at the Cuneta Astrodome in Pasay.

After battling stomach virus in the first two San Miguel losses, Reid fired 41 points — nine of them coming from beyond the three-point arc — as the Beermen sent the Batang Pier back to Mother Earth with a resounding thud in climbing to 2-2 overall.

The loss was the first for the Batang Pier, who trailed by 11 at the half but got buried by a hail of baskets in a torrid stretch in the third quarter to bow out of it, taking their first loss after a franchise-best 3-0 start to a conference.

Reid’s nine triples equaled the franchise-best mark jointly held by prolific import Lamont Strothers and the flamboyant Boybits Victoria. Reid, who won the Best Import award while playing for Rain or Shine, but has never won a championship, took a total of 11 triple attempts and was 16-of-28 from the field overall.

Coming into the contest, Reid averaged just 22 points a game and was 4-for-19 from beyond the arc.

As a team, San Miguel, with Marcio Lassiter draining five, gunned down a total of 18 treys, just one short of the franchise mark the Beermen dropped against Rain or Shine in 2009.

“It’s just great to be 100% healthy again,” Reid told reporters shortly after the lopsided win, made possible by the Beermen firing practically on all cylinders.

From 61-50 at the half, the Beermen never wavered and erected a 31-point lead late in the game to highlight the rout and downplay their dominance.

The San Miguel victory left just two teams – Alaska and Barako Bull – as the only ones undefeated in the season-ending conference, with the Aces trying to stay that way as they gun for the solo lead against Talk 'N Text Mondday at the Ynares Center in Antipolo.

That game is slated at 7 p.m. shortly after KIA Motors and NLEX try to bounce back from narrow losses in the 4:15 p.m. contest.

“The difference for us in this game is our energy, maybe because everyone is healthy,” San Miguel coach Leo Austria said. “We played inspired all game tonight and that is a good sign.”

Lassiter, who also battled the ill effects of a viral infection in the first three games, finished with 24 points with Chris Ross and Alex Cabagnot drilling in twin digits for another 29 combined.

Steve Thomas, who is filling in for Jarod Famous who is set to arrive early this week, and Terrence Romeo tossed in 21 points each for the Batang Pier, whose Asian import, Omar Krayem, finished with just four markers.

In the nightcap, Meralco was steadier in the stretch against the Star Hotshots (formerly Purefoods) and dealt the defending champions an 83-81 nipping.

Import Andre Emmet scored four straight points and had a crucial steal and an assist to Danny Ildefonso with 68 seconds left for what turned out to be the winning bucket for the Bolts.

Meralco rose to 2-2 with the win and sent the Hotshots to their second straight defeat in a 1-2 record.

Star had a chance to send the game into overtime, or even win it outright, as it regained possession with 4.2 remaining after an Emmet error in the sidelines.

The Hotshots came out of a timeout and gave the ball to Marqus Blakely, who was able to wriggle out of the Meralco defense and have a clear look at a three-point shot from the top of the key.

But his shot was a little to the right as time expired.
