JEDDAH: Team White doused cold water on Team Black’s hot streak last Friday in the early going of the 2nd round of their “Beat the Heat” Tennis Tournament, which is organized and managed by the Samahang Pinoy Tennis Club at the King Abdulaziz University sports complex.
Fred Masangkay and Boy Isuga of Team Black jumpstarted the 1st set of the 2nd of the round under category B2+ against Team White with wide margin, 8-1, against Norwin Catipay and Celso Abella, but their big initiative came out short for comfort as, Team White’s in the 2nd set doubles, Mike Amerol and Rolly Saldana, kept their category B2 doubles above par with 8-5 win to whittle down Black’s lead to 13-9 set points overall.
In the ensuing 3rd set, Bernie Soguilon-Pol Fernandez of Team deterred the challenge of their opponents, Cesar Quilenderino and Gary Bautro, who nearly completed a comeback in their category B2 match after the Team White’s pair overcame a 0-3 deficit to close in at 6-7. Team Black’s Pol and Bernie held serve to finish the 14th game at 8-6, and retained their lead at 21-15 set points overall.
Team White kept stalking their rivals in their 4th set match as Leo Maranion-Mark Anthony Banaag equalized their team’s 6-8 loss in the previous set by reversing the same score against Team Black’s Roy Timtiman-Julius Garcia, ending their opponents challenge at 8-6 after intervals of 2-1, 3-2, 5-4, and 7-5 leads to cut the Team White’s overall deficit to 23-27.
Marlon Pagsanjan and Mario Betorio, carried Team White ahead to lead for the first time in the 2nd round of the tournament against Team Black with a convincing display of stonewall blocking shots by the former and searing under-spin shots by the latter in another clash category B2 clash. The White’s pair overwhelmed Team Black’s top B2 doubles shackling the power-packed forehand shots of Waymor Carmelotes and the high-looping shots of Roman Alcantara to put their opponents behind at 7-1 and 8-2 after the match to close out the 5th set at 31-29 points overall.
In the 6th set under category C, Team White’s JM Bravo-Haji Pilongo sustained their momentum by racking up 5-0 continuous winning games right from the start of the set, allowing only 2 games for Team Black’s Mashur Jamiri-Allan Mabini in the 6th and 7th service games, then finally posted another 8-2 win for Team White that then put their team leading further at 39-32 overall. Playing under category C in the 7th set, the prolific duo of Team White’s Eman “Mencool” Usman and Sherwin Nervais aggravated Team Black’s woes with 2-0, 6-2, 7-4 leads against Ali Callanta-Arnold Tambalo to win the match at 8-4, and a 47-34 lead for Team White.
Nasser “the Chef” Cayquep and Zaldy Gabriel of Team White saw their servings in the 7th set rejected, costing them a 6-8 defeat at the hands of opponents, Yusuff Adriatico and Nilo Gamba of Team Black.
One more doubles match remain in the 2nd round, including another one from the 1st round. These are to be rescheduled after the 3rd round, according to the organizers. Team White now leads Team Black at 53-43 overall points. Under the tournament rules, the team that scores the higher total number of points shall be declared the champion of the SPTC “Beat the Heat” Tennis Tournament.
