DETROIT: Detroit’s James McCann hit a home run leading off the 11th inning to give the Tigers a 6-5 win against Houston on Thursday, denying the surprise packet Astros another impressive victory.

In other key results between leading teams, it was a day of dominant pitching, with the New York Mets beating St. Louis, San Francisco defeating the Los Angeles Dodgers and San Diego downing the Chicago Cubs, all by shut outs.

Detroit led 5-0 after six innings before Houston whittled back the deficit, and when Preston Tucker hit his first career homer in the ninth inning, the scores were tied.

In the 11th, McCann lined a shot into the Tigers’ bullpen, just beyond the reach of leaping left fielder Colby Rasmus. It was only the second homer of his career.

The Mets won 5-0 against St. Louis, with Jacob deGrom retiring the final 23 batters he faced.

In his latest stingy start at Citi Field, deGrom (5-4) struck out 11 over eight dominant innings. His only blemish was a single in the first.

The reigning NL Rookie of the Year posted his fifth double-digit strikeout game. He entered with a 1.61 ERA in 15 home games, and improved to 10-1 in his past 12 starts at Citi Field.

Lucas Duda hit two long homers for New York, which closed within half a game of idle NL East leader Washington.

San Francisco’s Madison Bumgarner got the better of Dodgers ace Clayton Kershaw — and rubbed it in by hitting a homer off him too — as the Giants won 4-0 to complete a three-game sweep of their NL West rival without having given up a run.

This was the third time this season that Bumgarner, the current World Series MVP, had started against Kershaw — the Giants have won all three.

Bumgarner (5-2) pitched 6 1-3 innings, striking out six. He also became the first pitcher to ever homer off Kershaw (2-3) when he sent a solo shot beyond left field in the third inning. He had managed just one single in 17 prior at-bats this year.

Cubs starter Kyle Hendricks threw his first career complete game and shutout to steer the visitors to a 3-0 win at San Diego.

Hendricks (1-1) struck out seven with no walks. Only one baserunner advanced to second base.

Kris Bryant hit a two-run homer beyond center field on the seventh pitch of the game to give the Cubs more than enough runs to win.

It was a homecoming of sorts for Bryant, who starred at the University of San Diego before being drafted by the Cubs.

Toronto’s R.A. Dickey also pitched a complete game as he guided the Blue Jays to an 8-4 win against the Los Angeles Angels.

It was Dickey’s (2-5) first nine-inning complete game since 2013. He struck out a season-high seven.

Edwin Encarnacion hit a three-run home run for the Blue Jays, who had won only one of their previous eight games.

Texas’ Mitch Moreland hit a solo homer and drove in two runs as the Rangers won 3-1 at Boston.

Moreland added two singles for the Rangers, who took the series after losing the opening game.

Texas starter Wandy Rodriguez (2-2) allowed one run in 6-2/3 innings to quickly bury memories of his previous start when he gave five runs inside five innings.

Tampa Bay overtook the idle New York Yankees and claimed sole ownership of the AL East lead by winning 3-0 against Oakland, with Alex Colome and four relievers shutting down the Athletics.

Baltimore’s Steve Pearce hit his first career grand slam in the first inning and that proved the difference as the Orioles edged Seattle 5-4.

Atlanta’s Julio Teheran pitched seven strong innings as the Braves beat Milwaukee 10-1 in a game that included the expulsion of Brewers pitcher Will Smith for using pine tar.

Arizona completed its first four-game sweep of an opponent in seven years by beating Miami 7-6, with A.J. Pollock producing a run-scoring infield hit with two outs in the eighth inning.

Cleveland’s Danny Salazar threw six scoreless innings to set up the Indians’ 5-2 win against the Chicago White Sox.

Colorado’s Jorge De La Rosa became the Rockies’ career strikeouts leader with 774 as the hosts downed Philadelphia 7-3.
