GLASGOW: Olympic bronze medalist Yogeshwar Dutt won the fifth wrestling gold medal for India beating Jevon Balfour of Canada in the final of the men’s freestyle 65kg category in the 2014 Commonwealth Games at the SECC Hall here Thursday.

Yogeshwar was declared the winner on grounds of technical superiority after he took a 10-0 lead within 1.53 minutes of the first period.

It was also the second gold medal of the day after Babita Kumari’s triumph in the women’s freestyle 55kg category.

Dipa Karmakar became the first Indian woman and the second person from the country to clinch a historic Commonwealth Games medal in artistic gymnastics when she won the women’s vault bronze at the SSE Hydro on Thursday.

Ashish Kumar had won India’s maiden gymnastics medals in CWG when he scalped the men’s vault silver and men’s floor bronze fours years ago in New Delhi.

England’s Claudia Fragapane won the gold with an average score of 14.633 while Canada’s Elsabeth Black took home the silver with 14.433.

Alex Dowsett used the disappointment of missing the Tour de France as motivation to win a gold medal in the time trial on the streets of Glasgow on Thursday.

The Tour began in England and went through his home county of Essex. But an untimely bout of bronchitis meant Dowsett could not ride for his Movistar team.

“I fought like I’ve never fought before,” the English cyclist said. “No one wanted that more than me today. It was bitter disappointment not being selected for the Tour de France. I spent the whole month fairly angry, not at anyone in particular, just angry at the situation.”

Three security guards were removed from duties after reports they took selfies with Usain Bolt. The security company issued a statement saying the staff were removed from the games’ training facilities after breaching conditions of their employment. The three are still employed by the company but are working elsewhere.

Roseline Filion of Canada and Pandelela Pamg of Malaysia finished on top in the preliminary session of the women’s 10-meter platform, which was being staged despite the fact all 12 competitors were guaranteed a place in the evening final. New Zealand advanced to the men’s field hockey semifinals against India after a 6-1 win over Malaysia. Undefeated Australia beat Scotland 5-0 and will play England in the semifinals.

Max Whitlock of England won the men’s artistic gymnastics floor final, becoming the first man at the games to win three golds, having taken the individual all-round title and a team event. Claudia Fragapane of England won gold in the vault.
