KUALA LUMPUR: Australian metalcore band I Killed The Prom Queen has been released from a Malaysian immigration detention center after being held for performing without valid permits, one of its members said.

Guitarist Jona Weinhofen said on Twitter the band was freed without charge.

“Freedom,” he tweeted. “A lot of press is stating we were deported. For the record we were released with no action against us.”

He added that the head of Malaysia’s Immigration Department apologized, but said the band would not likely be back in Malaysia any time soon. “Sorry Malaysia but after this horrible experience I don’t think we will return in a hurry,” he tweeted.

AFP was unable to reach immigration officials for comment.

Weinhofen had earlier tweeted that the show promoter failed to obtain valid visas.

The five-member outfit, in Malaysia as part of a Southeast Asian tour, were detained late Saturday by immigration officials.

The band was scheduled to perform its next gig in Indonesia on Sunday.

Metalcore is a fusion of hard core punk and heavy metal.

I Killed The Prom Queen features prominently on the Australian live music scene and has toured the United States and Japan.
