KARACHI: Pakistani stocks ended lower on Wednesday, ending a 10-day winning streak, on profit-taking in index heavyweights, while an overnight fall in oil prices dragged down energy stocks, analysts said.

The benchmark 100-share index of the Pakistan Stock Exchange closed down 0.23 percent, or 74.87 points, at 32,957.98.

“The market took a breather and closed below the 33,000 index level, with investors preferring to trim their positions,” said Hammad Aman, equity manager at Topline Securities Pvt Ltd. The index had gained more than 8 percent in the last 10 sessions through Tuesday.

Index heavyweights saw some profit-taking, with Habib Bank Ltd. dropping 2.04 percent, United Bank Ltd. down 2.25 percent and Engro Corp. Ltd. slipping 0.64 percent.

The rupee ended at 104.72/104.77 against the dollar, compared with Tuesday’s close of 104.70/104.75.

Overnight rates in the money market were flat at 4.50 percent.
